Matrix No. 4

In Italy Flanagan set up a studio and continued to work. The relative isolation of the idilic idyll made it difficult to know what to do next. Flanagan felt that both himself, and art in general,  was at a crossroads. Events changed in 2010 when he rented a studio in Woolwich, London. His mother became ill in England so this was an opportunity to care for her and concentrate on a new art idea that came to be called the Matrix series. A friend who worked at the Santi Antonio e Biagio e Cesare Arrigo Hospital in Alessandria, Italy had seen one of the earlier Matrix paintings and commissioned Flanagan to produce four works to be permanently displayed in the new ward. These new works broke with the tradition of painting in that there should be a narrative, a composition and any symbolic meaning beyond the surface. Flanagan had been considering for some time the Hegel theory that art had reached the end of its evolution and could develop no further. Today anything could be considered art and therefore art had reached the end of it's usefulness. However, art will always be made as long as there are artists to make it, and there will always be theories to explain it in context. For Flanagan this meant there was no longer any reason for contemporary art to be shown in a gallery in order to justify itself. In Italia Flanagan mettere su uno studio e ha continuato a lavorare. Il relativo isolamento dell'idillio idillica reso difficile sapere cosa fare dopo. Flanagan ha ritenuto che se stesso, e l'arte in generale, era a un bivio. Eventi cambiato nel 2010, quando prende in affitto uno studio a Woolwich, Londra. Sua madre si ammalò in Inghilterra e questa è stata l'occasione per prendersi cura di lei e di concentrarsi su una idea nuova arte che venne chiamata la serie di Matrix. Un amico che ha lavorato presso il Santi Antonio e Biagio e Cesare Arrigo Hospital di Alessandria, l'Italia aveva visto uno dei dipinti Matrix precedenti e commissionato Flanagan a produrre quattro opere esposta in modo permanente nel nuovo reparto. Queste nuove opere ha rotto con la tradizione della pittura che ci dovrebbe essere un racconto, una composizione e di qualsiasi significato simbolico oltre la superficie. Flanagan ha preso in considerazione da qualche tempo la teoria Hegel che l'arte aveva raggiunto la fine della sua evoluzione e potrebbe svilupparsi oltre. Oggi tutto ciò potrebbe essere considerato arte e quindi l'arte ha raggiunto la fine della sua utilità. Tuttavia, l'arte sarà sempre fatta finché ci sono artisti per rendere, e ci saranno sempre le teorie per spiegare nel contesto. Per Flanagan questo significava che non c'era più alcun motivo per l'arte contemporanea ad essere mostrati in una galleria al fine di giustificare se stesso. Unatural Nature

The success of Matrix came through research Flanagan was doing in digital art and confirmed that this was worth pursuing. In his series 'Unnatural Nature' he explored the process of computer generated digitally manipulated images to good effect, and is looking at ways of presenting images through an electronic medium such as TV monitors and the internet. The virtual nature of the images could be viewed in the virtual reality of a global art gallery that is nowhere, and everywhere, at once.


Il successo di Matrix è venuto attraverso la ricerca Flanagan stava facendo in arte digitale e ha confermato che questa era la pena di perseguire. In 'La natura innaturale' la sua serie ha esplorato il processo di immagini generate al computer digitalmente manipolate a buon effetto, e sta cercando il modo di presentare le immagini attraverso un mezzo elettronico come i monitor TV e Internet. La natura virtuale delle immagini può essere visto nella realtà virtuale di una galleria d'arte globale che è da nessuna parte, e dappertutto, in una sola volta.
